Karma really is a bitch.

Title: Chore Play
Series: Dirty Truths #3
Author: Piper Rayne
Genre: Romantic Comedy Standalone
Release Date: January 5, 2018
People like to see the womanizing jerk fall…the one who takes the number, but never calls? The guy who beds and never weds? Everyone wants to see that guy fall in love, right?
Pfft. Sounds like a script straight out of one of the box office movies my clients make.
Get your head out of the clouds because in real life the arrogant player doesn’t fall head over heels for the feisty brunette.
Unless the feisty brunette met him years before he’d perfected his cool demeanor. Unless she carved a spot out of his heart that never fully healed.

Our first meeting kick started my heart. Fourteen years later, our reunion was less heart and more kick. Turns out Quinn is just as hot and bothered to see me as I am her and I have the head injury to prove it.
I roll over, pulling the covers up to my neck, burying my pounding head into my pillow. The pressure is like a steaming pot rattling the lid.
Flipping back over, I stare up at my ceiling. I focus on the fan above me, circling around and around. My body shivers from my fever and I can barely form a coherent thought, my head is so heavy with congestion.
From the bedside table my phone dings, no doubt my agent asking where the hell my book is. The lies are going to catch up to me now. Now that I can’t sit in front of my computer for the next twenty hours straight to get her a shitty draft.
Bang.
I pop up in bed, my heart squeezing while the room spins.
Bang. Clank.
I throw the covers off me, swinging my feet over the side of the bed. Staying as still as I can, I wait. Maybe it was Toby, the cat next door, snooping in the trashcans again. Or the mailman dropping a package by the front door. But it sounded like it was inside.
“Fuck.”
I freeze at the male voice that’s not coming from outside my windows, but inside my house. I look over at my nightstand to grab my phone and that’s when I remember…I left it downstairs on my kitchen table. Shit. Slowly, I pull the drawer open, grabbing the heavy-duty flashlight my dad gave me as a housewarming present.
My socks slide on the hardwood floors as I inch closer to my bedroom door, waiting for another sound.
Bang.
Clank.
Water runs.
“What?” the intruder asks, and my hair whips in my face as I spin around the door frame into the hall, half expecting to see him or his partner. Shit. There could be two of them. I find nothing.
“You’re a smart girl, you can handle it on your own. I’ll be in at noon.” The water turns on again and the man’s voice triggers something inside of me. Familiarity courses through me, but I remind myself I only know two people in this city and only one of them has a key. The other one wrote me out of his life more than a decade ago.
I tiptoe down the stairs, my hand sliding down the railing, my other hand raised with the flashlight in my grip. Adrenaline gives me the strength I didn’t have minutes ago to get out of bed.
The loud noises increase, coming from the kitchen, so I don’t have to worry about my approach. I round the end of my stairs, walk past my bookshelves and, grabbing every ounce of my Wonder Woman strength, I run forward and hit the man over the head.
He spins immediately. “Whoa!” His hands move up to block me, but I continue hammering away at him. Over and over again until he loses his footing on the floor and falls to his ass, his hands criss-crossed in front of his face. “What the fuck?” he screams.
Dropping the flashlight, I dart over to the counter and yank open a drawer, plucking a butcher knife out, holding it out toward him.
His arms slowly lower and the knife trembles in my hands, thudding to the floor. In my haze of recognition, he slides his leg out and kicks the knife away.
“Jagger?” My voice is like a scared mouse in front of a cat.
Confusion is etched in every line of his still-handsome face. “Belle?”
Rage over the nickname he used to call me because of my love for reading lights a fire in my belly. “Don’t call me that!” I imagine patting myself on the back. In my head, I’m bouncing from toe to toe like a boxer preparing to pummel her opponent. But my exhilaration slows as I really see him now.
Fourteen years later and he still has the ability to steal my breath away. He rounds to all fours and his large frame rolls up until he towers over me. At one point, I loved that about him. The way my head fit perfectly under his chin. The way his long arms encompassed my entire body, warming me like a blanket. The way his lips would brush along the top of my head, silently telling me no one would hurt me as long as I was in his arms.
His movements pause, and his gaze fixates on me. Too quickly, that look of surprise vanishes. “Let’s not continue with the dramatics, okay?” He raises his hands in front of him in a placating gesture. Condescending and arrogant—a side to him that once turned me on.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
His gaze inspects my body like he’s trying to figure out what I look like under my pajama pants, t-shirt and sweater.
Fuck. I grab my stringy brown hair and pull it to the side, hoping to God I don’t look like I feel, which is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road.
The right side of his lips tip up like he’s enjoying what he’s thinking in that mind of his.
I crisscross the sides of my cardigan to cover myself. He can masturbate his dick off before he’ll ever get a look at me again.
Without a word he walks over to the counter, picks up a card and hands it to me.
Clean Queen.
“You hired this service?” He cocks an eyebrow.
In the haze of my illness, I never cancelled.

Jagger was definitely worth the wait.  I love that good second chance romance and this one did not disappoint.  And as always we get some great humor throughout.   Quinn was sassy and cute and I loved how she made him work for it.  Jagger has a sweet side that is only for her and I love seeing that side of him.  It was nice to see what happened all those years about and why Jagger was the way he was.  And also always it is nice to see the other characters and seeing their stories progress throughout as well, and yet, you could read this as a standalone though.
The writing style is so great, it flows nicely and never leaves anything out.  You get a perfectly well rounded story that you hate to see end.  I will miss these characters, but knowing these authors we will see them again soon.

The whole stethoscope-and-white coat thing isn’t my cup of tea.

I prefer a man with an artistic vein in his body. 9 – 5 hours. And I can definitely do without the half-lidded, sleepy bedroom eyes. (Okay, so those are kind of sexy.)

Tall, dark, and handsome doesn’t change the fact that he’s arrogant, cocky, and rude.

Not that I care, but he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with a quirky girl like me, which is why he said no.

Turns out no isn’t an option.

I have a quickie wedding to plan, and Dr. Jake Kissinger doesn’t have a choice. He looks at our situation like he’s stuck with me, but in reality I’m stuck with him. Stuck with his pouty mouth. His long, lean body. And stuck with those loose, low riding scrub pants. (Okay, so the doctor thing is growing on me.)

When spending time together turns into more than it should, I know I’m in trouble.

He isn’t supposed to make my heart pound.

I’m not supposed to make him look twice.

And we aren’t supposed to spend the night together. (Okay, so he has more than one artistic vein in his body, and other places.)

Falling for him is definitely a mistake.

Here’s the thing…

Jake is unavailable, and I know it.
Just not in the way you might think.

I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Review:

Jules and Jake meet in an unconventional way and I love it. It was a great way to start this book. Jake and Jules have some great banter and really seem to dislike each other from the beginning and yet there is an attraction there that they can’t deny. Sure makes for an interesting story and I loved every minute of it. I think it also tells a great story about going after what you want and not being afraid to fail. Jules is down on her luck and needs this client, Jake’s sister. And while Jake didn’t like her, his sister sure did.

I loved the sister, grandmother, etc…they sure added a lot to this story and kept it fun. I really like when a book ends up really being about more then just “a couple”. And this book was one of those. It was detailed, and original and fun and yet, Jake was unattainable in a way (but I don’t want to give it away as to why, and probably not at all what you think). Jules though couldn’t help how she felt and that makes falling in love so hard. Loving someone and letting them go.

This really is a tale of perseverance and also is fun and light-hearted overall with some heavier elements thrown in. But it is easy to keep reading page after page because the writing is that good.

“Can I help you?” I asked.
He blinked and met my eyes.
“What the hell are you doing over there?” I pushed to stand up straight.
“Right now?” He capped his water bottle. “Well, honestly… I’m just thinking you’d look better over the hood of that car than under it.”
I unhooked the hood and slammed it down, spinning on the balls of my feet.
Our eyes met properly. I didn’t like what I saw in his—desire, attraction, need. Which was obviously why a shiver ran down my spine.
I cocked a hip, putting my hand on it. “The only time you will ever get me over a hood of a car is if a wiper blade needs changing. So, unless you’re a wiper blade…”
Dex pulled his phone from his pocket and started tapping the screen.
I blinked. “What are you doing?”
He peered up at me through his unfairly thick eyelashes. “Seeing if I can get a wiper blade costume for Halloween.”
“I don’t even know how to respond to that.”
“You can buy wiper blade glasses.”
“What?”
He raised his eyebrows. “And a lady here on eBay will hand-make any costume. There’s my Halloween sorted.”
I stared at him. “You’re not getting me over anything, Dex. Definitely not a car hood. No matter what you think.”
He clutched his chest dramatically. “You wound me.”
“Unfortunately not fatally,” I muttered.
“You also underestimate me.”
“There’s a lot of that going around in this garage.” I put the bottle of coolant away.
“Touché.”
“Thank you.”
“Can I ask you something?”
I sighed and turned to face him again. “What?”
Earnestly, he asked, “Can you stop wearing those tiny shorts? Or yoga pants that make me want to touch your ass every five minutes?”
I looked down at the ripped shorts of my dungarees. “Can you keep your thoughts to yourself? Control yourself, maybe? Not look at me and see someone worth screwing?”

Review

My favorite thing honestly about this book is that it breaks the sterotypes that girls can’t be say a mechanic.  Jamie followed in her dad’s footsteps and cars are her passion and I love that so much.  She is tough and takes no $#!& from anyone, especially Dex.  Dex does’t want to hire “a girl” and yet he is intrigued by her and he loves her mouth, she challenges him and it keeps this book light and fun.  While dealing with sexism in a way, and proving that girls are just as good as boys.  While it can be a sensitive topic, the author did a good job of making us enjoy the balance that really came out of these two people.

The side characters were a great addition and also kept this book on the lighter side.  The banter everyone had with each other was so much fun and yet, we learned a lot about Jamie and Dex throughout the book and through their interactions with others.  Jamie really just wanted to be taken seriously.  And you could see deep down Dex and Jamie’s banter was because there was underlying feelings there.  Jamie just didn’t want to have them because she felt he didn’t respect her as a mechanic, and I loved her proving herself wrong in her feelings and proving him wrong in her work.

Overall this was a great light-hearted book that I would definitely read again.

Doggie Style by Piper Rayne

**Review at the bottom

Title: Doggie Style
Series: Dirty Truths #2
Author: Piper Rayne
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: November 20, 2017

Rumors never bothered me. If people want to guess at my sexuality because I design dog clothes for a living—let them. I know the truth.

I’m a red-blooded heterosexual male and just because I don’t have my tongue hanging out of my mouth around every female like my dog Cooper, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the female form.

Now with Teegan Lowery in my life I’m suddenly panting right next to Cooper, hoping for a taste.

I hired her for her stellar PR skills, but she’s slowly weaseling her way into a spot I’ve kept a NO VACANCY sign on for years. Everything about Teegan screams unavailable. The last thing I need is another dramatic, high maintenance woman in my life. Believe me, been there and done that.

But the sexual tension between us is like a game of tug-of-war and neither of us wants to lose.

I love dogs.
She hates them.
Turns out, we both love doggie style.

Piper Rayne, or Piper and Rayne, whichever you prefer because we’re not one author, we’re two. Yep, you get two established authors for the price of one. You might be wondering if you know us? Maybe you’ll read our books and figure it out. Maybe you won’t. Does it really matter?

review

Oh man, I love Leo so much. He never cared what people thought of him, I mean he was a straight guy making custom dog clothes, yet everyone thought he was gay. But this book does a good job of showing how assuming things about someone can negatively affect you, ie, Teegan. Teegan is trying to branch out on her own and Leo would be her first client, so she wants to do everything she can to impress him, and yet…she isn’t the best at the first impression.

While I feel you CAN read this without reading The Manny, I do recommend the other first as you get to know the characters in that one and you see all the guys in this one as well. I love the friendship between the 3 and the banter between them. They never fail to crack me up. I like that these two authors are able to not play into typical gender roles, in with having Leo design dog clothing and he learned it from his mother. I love that he is okay with going out to a gay bar with his partner.

You get some drama with Teegan and her past and with her mom but I really feel that Leo is the perfect boyfriend. But opposite the drama you get some sexy times and some laugh out loud moments. Overall this is a very well written book that flows nicely and I guarantee you will love this couple as much as I did by the end of the book.
